AI-generated document summaries

Readin CMS introduced two AI features: document summaries and revision notes. Here's how the summary feature works, how to customize its output, and how we used it when updating the Readin CMS manual.

Writing a summary of a document

Readin helps organizations manage, update, and publish documentation through a dedicated document portal.

We regularly update our technical manuals and publish them on the Readin resource site. You can see an AI-generated summary in the Readin CMS manual.

How does AI generate a summary?

AI can analyze large amounts of text, identify key information, and create a concise summary. It can also rephrase the original content to communicate the main ideas clearly.

AI-generated summaries can be customized through optional instructions, allowing users to tailor the output according to their needs. You can use instructions to control several aspects of the summary:

  • Key topics: You can ask the AI to emphasize findings and conclusions from the main topics/titles in the document.
  • Length: It is possible to set desired length limits for the summary, such as requesting a brief overview of 100 words or a more detailed 500-word summary.
  • Style and tone: Instructions can be provided to adjust the tone (e.g., formal, informal) or style (e.g., technical, simplified) of the summary, catering to different audiences.
  • You can also specify how the summary should be formatted. For example:
    • "Present key points as bullet points"
    • "Present key points as numbered items".

These instructions help tailor the summary to its intended audience.

How we summarized the Readin CMS manual

When documenting these features, we decided to try them in our own manuals.

For the Readin CMS manual, we wanted a short, practical overview. We asked the AI to “Keep it concise and under 100 words.” The result was accurate enough to use after a few minor edits, so we approved it for publication.
